Staying Safe in Johannesburg - A Message from KPMG Global Security
Street crime and tourist scams are the principal risks for business travelers to Johannesburg. All visitors should take personal measures to avoid being victimized. No area of Johannesburg is immune to petty and opportunistic street crime, though it is particularly important to exercise caution during hours of darkness as this is when most incidences of crime increase. We recommend that everyone use pre-arranged vehicle transportation for all movements to activities outside the hotel. Attendees and guests should travel and explore in groups and avoid solo ventures when practical – including leisure walks or exercise runs around the hotel.
Please take the following personal precautions:
- Avoid using KPMG branded luggage or wearing KPMG branded attire on your travel days. Company logos are often equated with wealth, therefore highlighting the wearer as a target.
- Maintain a low profile outside the hotel and do not carry anything openly that might be considered of value to a criminal (mobile devices, expensive jewelry, etc.).
- Upon arrival to your room, familiarize yourself with the hotel’s emergency exit locations and evacuation routes.
- Use prearranged ground transportation through a rideshare app (Uber), the hotel, or event organizers.
- Always carry a copy of your ID and passport/visa with you.
- Ensure your mobile device is sufficiently charged before leaving the hotel.
- Travel in pairs or groups rather than alone when exploring outside the hotel.
- Use ATM machines at the hotel or a bank and avoid any street-facing terminals.
- Exercise vigilance if visiting popular night clubs, markets, tourist and entertainment areas as these locations typically have elevated risk of crime.
- Travelers should pack some essential over-the-counter medicines (Imodium, Pepto Bismol, or similar) to manage any potential digestive issues that can be encountered while adjusting to the local cuisine. Alternatively, these are often available at hotel general stores or by calling the reception/concierge desk.
- Immediately contact the police (10111 or +27 11 375 5911) or the fire/ambulance service (10177) in the event of a security or medical emergency. Additionally, see below for how to report incidents to KPMG Global Security and International SOS.
- Area Notes: Muggings, armed robberies, and carjackings are common in the Central Business District (CBD), especially after dark. Areas of particular concern include the region between the railway station and Doornfontein, specifically the block bounded by Noord, Nugget, De Villiers, and Eloff Streets, as well as Claim, Bree, and Twist Streets. High-crime-risk areas also include Berea, Hillbrow, Joubert Park, Park Station, and Yeoville, which are located near the CBD. While certain parts of the CBD, such as Braamfontein and the Maboneng Precinct, have become increasingly popular with leisure travelers, it is recommended to visit these areas with a local guide and during daylight hours.
- Refrain from connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. If you must, always use a VPN and enable the "Always-Tunnel" option to encrypt your traffic.
- Ensure all devices have the latest software updates, including operating systems, antivirus programs, and security patches, before your trip.
- Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC on your devices when you're not actively using them to minimize exposure to unauthorized connections.
- After returning home, change passwords for accounts you accessed during your trip if you suspect any potential issues. Regularly monitor financial statements for signs of fraudulent charges.
- Enable Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on your personal accounts when available (e.g., email, banking, and social media). This adds an extra layer of protection if your credentials are compromised.
- Only bring devices and data essential for your trip. Avoid carrying sensitive or unnecessary data, and back up your devices before departure in case they are lost or compromised.
- Employ a privacy screen on your devices to prevent shoulder surfing in crowded areas like airports or hotels. Be mindful of where and how you're accessing sensitive information.
